Yani Sar Arteu (b. YC54) is a Gallente entrepreneur. He is the founder and original owner of Outer Ring Excavations, which he took, through a combination of luck and business savvy, from a small start-up to the most influential mining corporation in New Eden.

Early Life

Arteu was born in YC54 on Gallente Prime. His father was a factory worker, while his mother was a teacher. Yani's father was a hard working man, and passed on to his son a strong work ethic. Thanks to the influence of his mother, Yani also excelled in school, though he proved to be far more interested in sports and physical activities than learning.

When Yani was a teenager, his father lost his job. His father blamed the failure on the Federation government, which he claimed had made it far more difficult for native Gallente to get ahead, while giving every advantage to immigrants. The family lived on his mother's teacher's salary for over a year as his father looked for work.

Eventually, the family was forced to relocate to space, where his father had found work as a mechanic on a mining colony.

Adulthood

At first, it appeared that Yani would follow in his father's footsteps and be a simple laborer. He found work on the mining colony as a porter. He did little other than work and spend time alone in his quarters. He rarely went out with friends and was thought to be withdrawn and reclusive. However, he was actually saving up to attend university.

Once he had saved enough to pay his tuition, he enrolled at the Dodixie School of Business. He took classes during the day and worked at the spaceport loading atmospheric shuttles with cargo at nights. Because of his workload, it took him an extra year and a half to graduate.

Once he graduated, Yani found work with Astral Mining, first as an assistant office manager in its Metserel distribution center. Thanks to his experience working on a mining colony, he was able to easily integrate into the company and won acclaim from his blue collar workers. Within a few years, he had been promoted to manager of the entire Disier constellation's distribution center.

Yani spent only a few years in this position before he decided to strike out on his own.

Outer Ring Excavations

In YC91, at the age of 37, Arteu broke away from Astral Mining to found his own corporation. With the recent exploration of the Outer and Cloud Rings, Arteu took a gamble that his new corporation would be able to discover hidden wealth there. He was able to poach several of Astral Mining's lower-level management, including Verge Vendor Assistant Regional Director Orion Mashel, to fill his corporate leadership, while he offered competitive wages and the opportunity to earn company stock to the laborers, giving the start-up a strong base.

Things were tough for the first five years, as the company found it difficult to stand out among the many corporations in the area. Even worse, larger mining companies inside the Federation did their best to stonewall any challengers to their dominance, so ORE frequently found its bids undercut and customers sniped by larger firms.

Fortunes changed for the company almost overnight when, in YC96, a massive Obsidian Ochre asteroid, containing a huge amount of nocxium. The asteroid was reportedly the largest single deposit of nocxium ever found in New Eden, with some saying it was closer in size to a dwarf planet.[1]

This discovery prompted the Gallente Federation government to demand its location, as they believed the value of the asteroid to be too high for a small corporation to deal with.[2] The Federation offered an under-market price for the mineral value, leaving Arteu with a heavy decision; sell the location of the asteroid to the Federation for safe, but lower profits, or rebuke their offers and attempt to deal with the asteroid on their own.

Arteu ultimately decided to keep knowledge of the asteroid to himself and his small inner circle. He and a highly trusted group of miners began to mine the asteroid, keeping its location secret. Rather than strip the asteroid clean, Arteu decided to carefully extract the ore and slowly bring it onto the market, in an effort to avoid crashing the price of nocxium.[1] Because he had angered the Federation government, he moved all of his operations into the Outer Ring.

Present Day

The wealth the nocxium asteroid, and subsequent discoveries of nocxium rich asteroid belts, afforded ORE enabled the company to become one of the leading mining corporations in New Eden. The pressures of mining in the deep, remote locations found in the Outer and Cloud Rings led the corporation to become technological innovators as well. It developed the mining barge, which became a huge success, so that even ORE's rivals needed to purchase the ships to stay competitive.

In YC103, Arteu stepped down as the company's CEO. The move shocked the business world, as he was only 49 and still considered to have several good decades ahead of him. Arteu, however, was already a fantastically wealthy man, but had achieved little in his personal life. He had never married, nor ever been connected seriously in a romantic sense.

In YC108, Arteu was one of the several private shareholders in the company who were bought out by the Serpentis Corporation during their takeover.[3] Arteu was reportedly “distraught” over the sale, but believed he had no choice in the matter. He reportedly blamed Orion Mashel, whose tensions with Mordu's Legion caused a break in the relationship between the two organizations a year earlier that allowed the Serpentis to move in.[4]

Since then, Arteu has kept a low profile, though every couple of years rumors crop up that he is planning to found a new corporation, or somehow raise the capital to wrest ORE back from Serpentis control.
