Bater Renus (born YC 34) is a True Amarr Holder. He comes from a minor noble house under the vassalage of the Ardishapur Family. He is known as a harried, ineffectual man with little personal ambition or great skills. He is married to Raana, who has cowed him and with whom he had a son, Selan. Despite his unremarkable nature, he has attained a mild reputation for adultery.

Early Life

Bater was born in YC34 as the oldest son of the minor Renus Holder family in the Ardishapur domains. The family was meager by Holder standards, owning only a small parcel of land on an arid world and having only a few dozen slaves of their own. The family survived mainly on taxation of a nearby mine that was under their governance, but not ownership, and the sale of products produced by their more skilled slaves.

Bater had a typical noble upbringing, learning from private tutors and being groomed to take over his father's position. Even in his childhood, he displayed no remarkable traits, a fact that seemed fitting given his family's relatively poor stature. While his younger siblings showed some traits worth noting, Bater was the oldest and his father was too stubborn to change his heir.

Marriage

In YC63, Bater's parents arranged his betrothal to Raana, the third daughter of the more powerful and wealthy Mucor family. The hope was that the marriage would give the family access to more riches and influence. Bater did not object to the union, as Raana was an attractive woman and, despite not being in line to inherit any titles or peerage from her father, several social stations above Bater.

Holder

Bater's father died in YC85, leaving Bater to assume control of the family. In reality, he left much of the day to day operations to Raana, who proved to have a much better head for business and making connections than he. Raana quickly managed to penetrate the social circle of Bethora Ardishapur, a distant relation of Yonis Ardishapur.

Birth of Selan

In YC89, Raana gave birth to their only child, Selan. Bater left much of the raising of the child to Raana, though this was as much due to Raana wishing to keep her husband from being a negative influence on Selan.

After the birth of their son, Bater found his wife unreceptive to his presence, often treating him as little more than a nuisance. Soon after, the rumors of his infidelity began to swirl, including some quickly-suppressed whispers that he had a brief affair with Bethora. His wife, however, seemed not to care about the rumors, focused instead on strengthening the family's political standings and wealth.

Death of Selan

In YC109, Selan and Bethora's son Keral participated in a frigate race. Keral, pressured by his mother to win, installed an illegal prototype rig on their ship, causing it to careen out of control and crash into an asteroid, killing both boys. Once Raana discovered the cause of the wreck, and realized that Bethora had her son cloned in violation of the doctrine of Sacred Flesh, she had her former friend arrested and charged with heresy.

Bater simply watched from the sidelines as his wife brought down a member of the powerful Ardishapur Family. He worried that his own family would suffer as a result, especially as he no longer had an heir to his titles. However, no immediate consequences came from above, and it was rumored that Yonis Ardishapur actually approved of the actions of his wife.

Move to the Ammatar Mandate

In YC110, Yonis Ardishapur was made the ruler of the Ammatar Mandate. Ardishapur began transferring many of his loyal Holder families to the Mandate to begin the process of governing it. One of the families moved was Bater's. Though Lord Ardishapur treated with Raana more than Bater, it was Bater who received the new titles, and an entire continent on a mineral-rich planet to call his family's.

Since then, Bater has been working with Raana to fully exploit the new properties, as well as following Ardishapur's plan for reforming the Mandate.
