A major event that occurred during this story arc was the death of the Defiants leader, Karishal Muritor. He was killed by the Republic Fleet under orders of then-Prime Minister Karin Midular in order to maintain peace. He was lured into an ambush by his former commanding officer under a 'flag of truce'. He was being escorted by Ushra'Khan pilots who attempted to engage the Republic forces to save Karishal, only for Karishal himself to plead with the capsuleers to stand down even as his own ship was being destroyed.

His second in command Ode Goriad then took over and led the Defiants into the Great Wildlands and disappeared only to return later with the Elder fleet.
