Summary

While the EVE community is truly international and the game is actively being localised, "official" communication between CCP and the player base through CSM takes place in English. As knowledge of the English language is not equal throughout the players, many might keep their ideas as they don't feel able to express their thoughts appropriately.

Since the EVE community is truly international, it should be possible to find a group of volunteers providing that kind of support by players. New proposals should be translated on request of proposer only. Raw logs shall not be translated at all. This is in order to keep the workload of the volunteers within reasonable limits.

Publication of the translated documents should be done by adding appropriate pages to EVElopedia. In most wikis, this is being done by prefixing the original page name with the corresponding ISO language or country code, followed by a colon (e.g. "DE:this_is_a_proposal"). CCP will need to agree to this and ensure it is supported by the wiki.

Of course the English version would be definite and any translated version would require such a disclaimer.

Potential Solution

Maintain a list of volunteer translators and give them the tools to put translated content alongside the official English versions.

Pros

  • Allow non-native English speakers greater access to the CSM process
  • Reflects the international nature of Eve

Cons

  • Overhead in maintaining list of approved translators
  • Requirement to ensure peer review of translations.
