Why is Terran technology often portrayed as far more advanced than New Eden's? Haven't the empires been in space longer than the Terrans were before they came through the EVE Gate and settled- or have I got that wrong? I know of course the fiction has the empires having to start from scratch but doesnt it also imply they have now been spacefaring once again for over a millenia? --Caiman Graystock 14:04, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Civilization in the Milky Way has been advancing for many thoousands of years. That's quite a bit longer than "more than one millenia". The jove were the only race that didn't collapse back then (though they apparently are in collapse right now witht he Jove Depression), and their technology is considered to be a lot more advanced. Let's just take the Jove Shuttle apotheosis we recevied as a gift some time back as a comparison to the other shuttles. As a shuttle it is a lot more advanced. It sports 4 different kinds of scanners, and they are all stronger. And this is just a shuttle. Image other ships and their weaponry should they exist or be found.

Has the EVE history been retconned? The established backstory (http://www.eveonline.com/background/jump/jump_01.asp) clearly points out that the EVE Gate is a stargate built next to the wormhole, but not the wormhole itself. If the backstory has been retconned that's fine, but in that case the retconning probably should be mentioned.

From reading that article I think that we can say that the structure and the wormhole are one and the same. The structure is somehow connected to the wormhole to stabilize it; ships wanting to travel between the galaxies activate the gate and enter the wormhole. The collapse of the EVE wormhole and the explosion of the EVE gate device are the same event.

About the North Star Speculation

Assuming that the dates in this article are correct, the EVE wormhole collapsed sometime after 7987 A.D. The speculation is that the bright star seen in 23346 A.D. is the light of the collapsing EVE gate in the Milky Way galaxy. That would mean that New Eden is less than 15,359 Light Years from the Milky Way.

Considering contemporary astronomy this distance would be nonsensical. The Milky Way by itself is 100,000 LY wide and its nearest spiral galaxy neighbor, Andromeda, is 2.5 million LY away.

And to head off discussions of faster than light explosions, aside from the obvious implications on the field of relativity, such an event wouldn't be directly observable.
