Cloaking devices allow a ship to move around with a lower visibility than normally. All ships start cloaked when jumping through a new gate, but these allow them to stay cloaked and move about, though they can't use modules at the same time. These are most commonly covops or recon ships, most of which use the covert ops II cloak, allowing them to even warp cloaked, and are essential for gathering intel.
Activation:
Cloaking Devices can't be activated in the following cases:
- If you are targeted and locked by another ship or module.
- If you are within POS shields.
- If you are already cloaked by a stargate cloak.
- If you are within 2000m of any celestial object.
- If one of your module is active.
Tips:
- While probe launchers and other modules can't be activated while cloaked, the onboard directional scanner of your ship will still work therefore enabling you to scan without getting scanned yourself.
- Any object that comes within a 2000m radius around the center of your ship will disable the cloak, leaving you open to attack.
- The automated cloaking that activates after jumping through a Stargate is a different process. Therefore you first need to deactivate the Stargate Cloak by moving or awaiting for it to deactivate before activating the Cloak.
- A good technique when caught in a Warp Bubbles is to align to a planet, activate a MicroWarpdrive(MWD) or Afterburner(AB) for one cycle only (no autoreaload) and then activate the Covert Ops Cloaking device. This way you have a fair chance of escaping the bubble as the velocity bonus of the MWD or AB remains active for a short time even while cloaked.
