Definition

Salvaging a wreck that belongs to another player that he/she wanted to salvage. This action should be distinguished from salvaging wrecks which are manifestly abandoned by its owner and also situation where the wreck owner agree to you salvaging his wrecks.

As a Profession

Ninja salvaging as a profession is no longer decent source of income early on. In an update, CCP changed the drop chance of salvaged parts.

It is no longer viable as profession, at least early on. Chances of finding valuable salvage parts have been nerfed significantly. Salvaging is now more of a way to make some additional revenue.

Minimum Requirements

  • A ship equipped with at least one Salvager I.
    • Skills: Survey III, Mechanic III, Electronics I, Salvaging I
  • A victim to ninja salvage from.

Recommended Requirements

  • Since you are going to have to manually fly near the wreck to salvage them, a reasonably fast ship with lot of high slots for fitting Salvager Is is recommended.
  • You may also want to train your salvaging skill and put salvage tackle rigs on the ship in order to improve your salvaging chances.

Advantages

  • Unlike ninja looting, ninja salvaging doesn't criminally flags you. So there's little or no risk involved unless you do this in a low security system.
  • Some of the items obtained in salvaging are very valuable.
  • Doesn't require much skill training.
  • Salvaged materials don't take much cargo space.
  • You won't need weapon modules unless you're in low security systems or for other miscellaneous reasons. The victim will blow up the ships for you.

Disadvantages

  • You need salvage equipment to salvage wrecks, meaning some of your high fitting slots won't be available for other useful equipment.
  • Since they are not your wrecks, you can't use tractor beams to bring wrecks to you. You will need to personally get within 5000m with a Salvager I, or 6000m with a Salvager II of the wrecks.
  • This may cause player owned corporations to dislike you and may decide to declare war on your own player corporation so they can shoot at you without Concord interfering. If you're in a NPC corporation then you are safe.
