Talk:Base Signature Strength
From Backstage Lore Wiki
I rolled back the edit on how to calculate the measured signature strength. Because: a) this article is about base signature strength, not measured signature strength. b) the formula made use of constants that where not explained, and more complex than needed because of how the formula was written down. c) the formula and measured signature strength is already described in the article Signal Strength. If you want, you could expand said article with some example calculations.
I think we should try to avoid overly long articles. Each article should describe 1 thing, not a bunch of things.
- I agree, but, like you said, the formula is not described... The article is, however, about using Signature Strength to discriminate between signatures (the example particularly so). Part of doing that is identifying which measured signals are in which band based on one's sensor strength. People want to know how that conversion works. The bits you removed showed exactly that, and those 5-6 lines were less than 4% of the total page length.
- I wont contest that a detailed description of the formula belongs in the Signal Strength article, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be touched on here in a context and format particular to the task at hand. Not mentioning the formula is like writing an article about starting a car without any reference to how "keys" (or buttons) are used to start the ignition. A critical step is missing which an experienced driver might not miss, but whose absence could confuse a new comer. --Faulx 1758, 7 November 2012 (GMT)
- I can see your point. You could copy the formula presented in the Signal Strength article, and point to there for an extended explaination. However, I still feel that the Base Signature Strength is about a property of exploration exploration sites (signatures), Signal Strength is about how your scan probes interact with said signature. The two are closely related as one would not make sense without the other, but they are still separate concepts, and need to be described in separate articles.
- Maybe, the Base Signature Strength should be separated into two articles, one describing what a the property is, and a second one that describes how to use scan probes to calculate this Signature Strength from the picked up Signal Strength. But this would be a major rewrite and likely is not worth the effort. Elisa Fir 22 06, 7 November 2012 (GMT)
