What is hacking and what are hacking sites?

Hacking is a mini profession where you "hack" to open locked structures at Hacking sites to get the rewards they contain.

Where can I find hacking sites?

You can find hacking sites at various Racial COSMOS systems and you can find them through Exploration.

What do I need to hack?

Modules

In order to hack, you will need to fit a Codebreaker I or Codebreaker II module onto your ship.

Please note: Codebreaker modules are used for the Hacking mini profession only, they cannot be used to access anchored and password-protected Secure containers in space belonging to players or corporations.

Skills

In order to use the Codebreaker module, you will need the Hacking skill.

Hint: Every level of hacking increases the per-cycle chance of a successful hack on the container, so the higher it is the better. If you are hacking 0.0 hacking sites, there are some containers that you will not be able to hack unless you have at least a certain minimum level of the hacking skill. Most pilots recommend training the skill to level 4 in order to be able to open all containers. Training the Skill to level 5 only gives you another 5% chance and access to the Codebreaker II module; however, it does not unlock any higher level containers

Probes

In order to find Exploration Hacking sites you will need probes. For information on how tu use them have a look at the Scanning Guide.

I have found a site, how do I "hack" it?

Once you have found an site:

  • You will need to clear out all of the NPC rats.
Please note: Usually you will not be able do any hacking if any of the key rat spawns are still alive. Some containers are dual locked. i.e they need to be Hacked and a a specific NPC Spawn needs to be destroyed
  • Once all of the rats are cleared, you will see on your overview some structures that have the same icons as cargo containers. Approach to within 2.5km of one of these containers.
Please note: You may notice that if you try and open these containers, you will get a message stating that its locked, this is why you need the Codebreaker, to unlock it!
  • Target and lock the structure. Once you have a lock, and have it selected, activate the Codebreaker module on your ship.
Please note: It may take several module cycles to hack the container, so be patient. Once you have successfully hacked the container, you will receive a message indicating a successful hack and the module will deactivate.
  • After a successful hack you will now be able to open the container, grab the loot and proceed to the next container. Once all of the containers have been hacked and looted head home with the spoils.

What sort of rewards should I expect from a hacking site?

The rewards for hacking sites usually fall under the following categories:

Personal tools
Namespaces

Variants
Actions
