A short and quick FAQ on the Hacking Profession from Ezratu's Extremely Helpful Forum Post on Hacking : [1]

Please contribute to this article if you can. There is very scant information about this Profession.

Q: What can I hack? A: Special locked spawn containers in COSMOS complexes. For example, the Serpentis Survey Site pocket within the Contested Gallente Skeleton Comet complex in Deltole.

Q: How do I hack? A: Train Hacking skill, fit a Codebreaker, fly to within 5 km of a spawn container you want to hack and activate the Codebreaker. The cycle time on a CB is 10 seconds, so every 10 seconds there is a chance of success dependent on your Hacking skill. Once you have successfully unlocked a spawn container, you can open it like any other container. Q: I activated my Codebreaker, it ran a few times and then stopped. I can't activated on the container any more. A: You're probably getting too many damage messages to see the message that says no tools are needed any more for that container. i.e. once a container is unlocked, you can't activate a Codebreaker on it until it re-locks. Congratulations, you've opened a container with Hacking!

Q: I succeeded in unlocking a can, but I still can't do anything with it! A: The Codebreaker range is 5km, but the range to open a can is 1.5km just like any other can. It seems like a stupid question, but this one got me a few times. :)

Q: I succeeded in unlocking a can, I'm within 1.5 kilometers, and when I try to open the can I see the Cargo Container window briefly and then it disappears immediately. What the heck? A: It seems that some COSMOS cans are dual-locked. Not only do you have to unlock them with a Codebreaker, you have to kill a rat associated with that can. Which rat? No easy way to tell, especially since these cans are usually in the middle of nasty spawns.

Q: What can I get via hacking? What's the point? A: Mission-specific items for COSMOS missions, components needed by COSMOS BPCs, and COSMOS-related skills such as racial Encryption Methods skillpacks. Yes, the same Encryption Methods skillpacks needed for Kali.

Q: What can type spawns what items? A: I'm starting a list soon. Yes, items are dictated (at least to some degree) by the can type. (There are 5-6 different types of containers in the Survey Site). I'm reasonably confident that the Encryption Methods skillpacks are on the left side of the pocket, near the nasty spawn with 2x 750k Serpentis Data Sentinels. I also suspect that these may be in one of the aforementioned dual-locked containers that actually requires you to kill the rats to access them. :(

Q: Can multiple Codebreakers be stacked to open a can more quickly? A: I don't know. I suspect so, but I need my midslots for cap rechargers so I have some hope of surviving the spawn. Even with 2 therm and 2 kin hardeners and a MAR II in my Brutix, with an alt in an Exequeror running two Solace medium remote reps and four med repair drones, the big spawn in Deltole is barely tankable. Buy me an Ishtar and I'll give you an answer. :)

Q: What can type spawns what items? A: Yes. each can type is very specific

Sleeper (gold coloured items) only spawn in the blue cans (stasis etc.) and the mechanical stuff in the relics. There is also a tierd system too and you can further break down into 3 seperate tiers.

Q: Can multiple Codebreakers be stacked to open a can more quickly? A. No. At least from my experience. ive never put 2 hacker mods on the same can before but me and a friend do sleeper and if he is hacking and i am too the spawn container will remain locked to me even if he has managed to access the can. It seems that each hacking module is independent.

Q. Does the level of skill determine how fast/easy the can is to open. A. No. The 3 Tier system relates to your skill level and i can say that your rank of "hacking" or "Archaeology" will determine the level of spawn container you can open. If you receive a message that goes along the lines of . .You cannot extract nothing of value from the "ancient stasis core" it just means you need the next level of the skill to open it.
