Developed by the Gallente in the Caldari-Gallente War as a means to fight off the solo-fighters that the Caldari used to great success. Now drones have been developed by every Empire in Eve each prefering to use the weapons (damage type) of the home Empire that created them.
Drones have expanded upon to include many more functions including Logistics and Electronic Warfare. The two factors of ship design that limit drone usage are the size of the Drone bay (m3) and the Drone bandwidth.
Drones are very versatile and can do anything from mining and salvaging to repairing or webbing enemy ships. However, it should be noted that they have very limited tanking ability.
