The [[Merlin]] is a very strong combat frigate who's strength lies in its bonus in shield resistance. It is usually delegated to mission running duties for new pilots, but it also makes a very strong PvP ship, though not as popular as the[[ Rifter]]. In most cases, you will find the Merlin to be shield tanked (in rare cases, they can be armored tanked) due to it's 4 mid slots, the highest of all the T1 frigates (rivals only by the [[Griffin]]). Due to it's bonus to hybrid optimal, it is possible to fit the Merlin to be a sniper frigate at the cost of severely dropping it's DPS and reducing it's tank to being near non-existent. And because the Merlin has a optimal bonus rather than damage bonus, some pilots opt to fit other weapon systems on the Merlin;projectiles for their lower fitting requirements and their lack of cap usage, and lasers for their longer optimal range. | The [[Merlin]] is a very strong combat frigate who's strength lies in its bonus in shield resistance.
