Summary

Under the current system, all Exploration, Recon, and Survey probes lose ownership under the following situations.

  • Dock up
  • Leave the system
  • Exiting or quitting EVE
  • Disconnection
  • Desync
  • Client crash
  • Downtime

One, two, three, and seven are not the issue, however four, five and six are.

In some systems you have to deploy upward of ten probes to cover the entire system. These probes can cost anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 ISK. These are just exploration probes, if you are surveying a system for moon mining you can deploy upward of 50 probes (if you're fast enough) each costing between 90,000 and 195,000 ISK.

Under the current system you could lose anywhere between 5,000 ISK and 10,000,000 ISK depending on what you're doing. This loss cannot be recovered by petitioning, even though the pilot was not at fault. On top of the ISK loss, the pilot also has to re-do all his probes. This all amounts to a significant amount of wasted/lost time.

When you get disconnected, the probes remain in SPACE, they do not disappear. Exploration probes will remain for over an hour if you disconnect when deploying. So the probes do not disappear, you just cannot communicate with them. If nothing else, this results in extra – unnecessary – objects the solar system simulation has to keep track of.

Solution

Probe information should persist between sessions and after regaining connection to Eve the player should regain communication with his probes. It is understood that this is a complex technical issue, but it would be very much appreciated by everyone who uses probes.
