Overview
Electus Matari is an independent capsuleer organization loyal to the Minmatar Republic and operating for the most part in tribal space (Heimatar, Metropolis, Molden Heath, The Great Wildlands). Most of EM's operations concentrate on combat activities against pirates, extortionists and those who imagine they can claim Republic space for solely their own use.
Electus Matari's executive power is solely in the hands of Gradient, the only corporation in the cluster that has demonstrated the a long-term, unwavering support for the Minmatar Republic, regardless of its current internal politics or tribal balance of power.
For more information, see EM public information.
Some highlights on history
Work in progress --Elsebeth Rhiannon (talk) 08:30, 10 May 2019 (CDT)
Origins and principles
Electus Matari was officially founded in 107.08.27 by like minded Matari corporations (Gradient, Minmatar United Freedom Front, Liberal Trading Co, Minmatar Marines, Mercenaryz, Void Spiders, Frogly Enterprises, FarCry Inc, and Thrace Inc) to provide a more structured industrial and logistic capacity to the The Republic and to assist government organizations such as The Republic Fleet, The Republic Justice Department, and The Republic Security Services[1]. Along with the industrial and logistic support to the Minmatar Republic, EM was also chartered to actively defend the citizens, assets, and territory of the Minmatar Republic from all threats internal and external, while supporting the human rights and liberties of all Matari including those currently living in foreign captivity.
Since its formation, Electus Matari has faced ups and downs[2][3][4][5], disbanded and reformed, but constantly strived to work and fight for the free tribes. The alliance has always had the policy of allowing temporary memberships and periodic absences from the alliance to pursue other interests, meaning that the core group of corporations has shifted several times. Since its conception though Electus Matari has remained in the Republic Space, concentrating its operations there, and worked in various ways for the end of slavery and for keeping the Republic safe. Throughout the turbulent politics of the Minmatar Republic, while allowing individual capsuleers to voice varying opinions, the alliance itself has refrained from taking stances for or against any individual leader of the Republic, instead remaining loyal to the nation itself.
Antislavery work, and the slaver wars of YC109
In addition to the Vitoxin research, Electus Matari member corporations have always been involved in anti-slavery in more direct manners, especially prevention of illegal slave trade by the Empire, and bringing refugees across the border into Republic space[6][7][8]. (Parts of those operations were later to be known as "The Secret Stairway"[9].)
In YC108, after EM was accused many times of harboring freedom fighters and did not take too much care to vehemently deny it[10], PIE Inc declared war on the alliance[11][12]. These hostilities quickly spread as both Minmatar[13][14][15] and Amarr[16] [17], and even some Caldari[18][19], organizations got involved with the fighting. In February YC109, Electus Matari was involved with a notorious smuggling group The Wolves of Pator[20][21], which did not help calm down the escalation.
These wars stretched for almost two years, on and off, involving various groups and alliances, and since then Electus Matari has regularly been in a way with slaver organizations.
A fracturing people
These wars were not uncomplicated Amarr vs Minmatar escalations, though. Amidst the fighting, Karishal Muritor was finally captured and executed by the Republic Fleet[22]. The Minmatar Forces known as "Matari Five" fractured, with Ushra'Khan siding with the rebels[23], Fimbulwinter leaving the Republic altogether[24], Electus Matari questioning the Republic's reasoning but remaining loyal[25][26], and Namtz'aar Kin and Fate Weavers siding strongly with the Republic and severing all ties to Ushra'Khan[27][28].
Despite calls for peace and unity[29], also by Electus Matari, [30] the situation escalated both in space and among baseliners[31], encouraged by Ushra'Khan's infamous "1 isk for Midular"[32] campaign and the refusal to co-operate with Electus Matari in arranging a proper burial for Karishal Muritor[33]. Electus Matari's call for a re-election was generally well received[34], but brewing up trouble continued[35], and the Republic was fast spiraling towards a civil war.
Defense of Molden Heath
Anti-piracy and securing the spacelanes and industrial work in tribal space has been another Electus Matari main goal from the beginning[36]. Electus Matari was one of the alliances active in Molden Heath, as part of such collectives as MH-Sec and Coalition of Antipirates, from YC107 onwards[37]. After the fracturing of the loyalist forces over Karishal Muritor, some reconciliation happened on those operations between the Matari forces, especially after Ushra'Khan lost their station in Providence and joined the fighting in Molden Heath in YC109/09[38]. However, this did not last long, since the close contact between the disagreeing Matari also ripped open the wounds of the Muritor incident[39][40]. A call of what was left of the Defiants to join them in the fighting caught the attention of many, and made Electus Matari clearly and publicly take the stance of following the Republic in the matter[41].
Despite independent capsuleer efforts to secure Molden Heath, it remained a backwater and a cradle for restlessness. In YC110 when the Angel Cartel made a claim for Skarkon, Electus Matari was [42][43][44] again strongly voiced its stance that the only party that can own Republic space is the Republic itself.
Vitoxin/Insorum research
Since YC107, Electus Matari, especially Re-Awakened Technologies, was heavily involved in the development of a Vitoxin cure[45]. While calls for Republic[46] or the Sisters of EVE[47] to publicly assist in the research went largely unanswered due to security reasons, Electus Matari worked on crucial parts of the related basic science and independently searching for a cure.
When the information that the so-called 'Elder Fleet' had used Insorum, the research team inquired after details[48], but never received answers. As secrecy was no longer necessary[49], the research team published their findings. Most of the publicly available research into Vitoc today was originally based on and published by Electus Matari members[50].
Electus Matari in the changing Republic
After Electus Matari had repeatedly voiced its support to the Minmatar Republic against those who defended the acts of Defiants, and for a peaceful resolution of the Starkmanir issue[51] amidst the riots[52] there were those who considered the alliance supporters of prime minister Karin Midular specifically. Thus, in the dramatic events of YC110, where a previously unknown Minmatar force attacked the Empire to recover the Starkmanir[53], officials of the government were found murdered[54], and the Parliament dissolved, many expected EM to take a stance against Maleatu Shakor.
Electus Matari leadership and members quickly restated that their stance was unchanged and the alliance remained supportive of the Republic itself, not of any particular leader or government[55][56][57]. It was also pointed out by the then leadership, that strictly speaking the 'Elder Fleet' was not a Republic concern at all, as it was not a Republic force, nor apparently hostile to the Republic[58]. However, severe concerns over the legality of the power switch were also raised by the alliance[59][60][61].
"There are a lot of holes here. Questions unanswered. Void where proof should be.
And blood is filling those holes.
But perhaps the saddest thing in all of this is, it doesn't matter.
What's done is done. Our duty now lies with the living, with those who survive."
(Evanda Char, YC110.06.12)[61]
Electus Matari publicly renewed their Oaths of Loyalty to the Minmatar Republic after the regime change in YC110.07.01[62]. At the same time, the Amarr Militia was declared categorically KOS[63]. As alliances were not allowed into the Militias in the beginning, EM pilots wishing to enlist served under the flag of 17th Minmatar Tactical Wing [64], with the alliance supporting the war effort[65].
The tide comes in, the tide goes out
After the turbulent times of the regime change, Electus Matari settled to a period of regular operations. Support for the Militias rekindled the old slaver wars[66], and Electus Matari pursued antipirate operations as usual[67][68].
Electus Matari has always had close ties to the Great Wildlands, having flown in that region as allies to local NRDS alliances (eg Foundation, True Reign). Thus the news of Thukker joining the Republic was generally received well [69][70].
In 111.09 the alliance suffered a big blow, when the long-term executor Evanda Char (Sb.) stepped down[71]. She was, however, succeeded by an experienced leader, Rocius Desher (Br.), the former Gradient CEO[72].
Electus Matari first joined the Tribal Liberation Force[73] in the end of the year 111. This required, at the time, that corporations leave the alliance to enlist individually, which was cumbersome, but the campaign ended succesfully with full Minmatar control of the warzone[74]. Since then, the alliance has semi-regularly enlisted - later, when it became possible, as an alliance - for focused campaigns, but has not stayed in the Militia for indefinite periods of time[75].
Combining antipiracy, Militia work, and presence in the Great Wilandlands served to keep the alliance diplomats busy[76][77][78][79].
Arek'Jalaan
Arek'Jalaan was a research project lead by a Caldari defector, scientist Hilen Tukoss[80]. In June YC113, Electus Matari along other loyalist forces was instrumental in helping Tukoss defect and getting him to work with Eifyr & Co[80] and participated some in the further research. However, concerns of sharing research with outsiders were also raised [81][82].
This involvement of loyalist capsuleers in these events and the Militia wars lead to a break-down of previously almost completely friendly association with many (but not all) Caldari State capsuleer forces[83].
The events in Colelie
In the year YC115, the Sebiestor Chief and former Prime Minister, Ray of Matar Karin Midular was shot while attending a public event in the Federation. While attempts to save her life were made, they were not succesful, and not having backup clones, she died [84]. Outraged and upset, Minmatar Fleet forces gathered a capital fleet and attempted to enter Federation space to extradite the shooter. In the events that followed, EM commanders on the field sided with the Republic forces, engaging the Federal defence fleet despite calls on local - some from EM itself - to stand down[85].
Electus Matari reformed
In YC116, EM was disbanded[86] after a loss of momentum when key personnel[87] and corporations[88] left. Reasons for this have been tied in speculations to the regime change in the Minmatar Republic and the Colelie incident, but there has not been public information released on the matter. After being mothballed for about two years, however Electus Matari reorganized around Gradient, one of the original founding corporations, on YC118.11.09. Since then, the new EM has been involved in various combat operations in tribal space, including for example Great Wildlands, the Molden Heath and the warzone. Unlike the old EM with a complicated (and often frustratingly slow) Council structure of governance, current alliance was formed around the leadership of Gradient, with Gradient's CEO (Challis Drant) and XO (Debes Sparre) having ultimate power. Compared to old times, the new Electus Matari shows a significantly increased focus on combat, and a new willingness to work with a variety of allies[89][90]
The Thebeka Incident
In the end of YC120, what started as a small humanitarian / slave rescue operation[91] during a Blood Raider attack in the Amarr Empire[92] escalated into full out supporting of a major rebellion[93][94] and trying to encourage more[95] in the Thebeka system from Electus Matari's Freedom's Gate station[96]. The situation quickly escalated into a multi-way fighting between several capsuleer organizations[97] before the rebellion died down[98]. (Freedom's Gate has since been deployed again in two other campaigns, and today and serves as a Memorial to the Battle of Colelie[99].)
The War of the Pork
In the end of YC120 and first half of YC121 Electus Matari was also involved in fighting so called "Hogs Collective", a lose coalition of highsec dwellers (including the combat outfit with possibly the most excellent organization name in the game, Aporkalypse Now). In December YC120, Hogs attacked Electus Matari structures, but failed to remove any. War fizzled out, which lasted for some months, until in April and May YC121, Phoenix Naval Operations temporarily joined EM to fight this common enemy[89]. After heavy fighting[100][101][102][103] and the removal of several Hogs structures from Minmatar space, Hogs were forced to hire WinterCo mercenaries to defend their Fortizar. Initially taking some good fights and managing to finish one more Hogs structure against superior numbers, Electus Matari yielded to the vastly overwhelming (300 vs over 10,000 members in the respective groups combined) mercenary force in YC121.05.15, brokering a deal with Hogs that should ensure a relative peace between the entities for at least some months. [104]
Electus Matari in the Triglavian Invasion
When the Triglavian involvement with known space started, Electus Matari members were involved in "diving" to the Abyssal space from the beginning. Alliance Leader Debes Sparre featured in top-15 for the "proving grounds" combat scoreboard for a long time. When the invasion began, EM declared their intent to work together with the Arataka Research Consortium [105] in fighting the threat and finding out the most effective ways to do so. EM FCs and members were fighting the Triglavians in the first days of the invasion areas surrounding the border system Colelie and in Derelik, the tribal home region of the Ammatar.
Sports
Several members of Gradient competed in the Racing League in YC109-YC111, most as part of the Venture Racing team[106][107][108].
Electus Matari has taken part on the Alliance Tournamet several times[109].
