[[New Eden (cluster)|New Eden]] is divided into five major '''empire factions''': the [[Amarr]], [[Minmatar]], [[Caldari]], [[Gallente]], and [[Jove]]. Of these, the Jove remain segregated, resulting in common references to "the four empires". All five are of human origin; their ancestors entered the cluster thousands of years ago through a [[EVE Gate|natural wormhole]]. Though most of the first settlements collapsed when the wormhole suddenly closed, a few survived. Today’s races are the descendants of those scattered colonies.<br><br>

Modeling their recovery after the [[Gallente Federation]]'s success, the Minmatar Republic was born. But despite rising to prominence on the world stage, more than one third of the present-day population remains enslaved. The Minmatar people today are resilient, ingenious, and hard-working. Many of them believe that democracy, though serving them well at first, will never restore what was taken from them so long ago. Instead, they long for a government truly reflective of their tribal culture, and remain deeply attached to their enslaved kindred. The Jove have been civilized longer than any other race in New Eden and have gone through several golden ages, now long-since shrouded in the past. The current Jove Empire is only a pale shadow of its former self, mainly because of the [[Jovian Disease]]—a psychological disorder that is always fatal. For this and other reasons it remains very much closed to the other races, and few foreigners reside within the Jovian Empire.}}
