There are five royal families within the [[Amarr|Amarr]] Empire, each headed by the prospective Emperor/Empress. These individuals are termed heirs and must go through a rigorous selection process to choose a new head of state, culminating with the championship race, which involves citizens of the Empire. The winner succeeds to the throne, while the losers must commit ritual suicide to 'clean the slate', so to speak.

The social and physical difference between the two disappeared ages ago, but the traditionalists remember. Tash-Murkon would have a hard time holding the Empire together, but Davit is the master of turning chaos into profit.
