The Battle of Mekhios, fought on June 10th, YC 110, was a major space engagement between the Amarr Empire and the Minmatar Elder Fleet. It occurred in orbit around Mekhios, the third planet in Sarum Prime. Jamyl Sarum led the Amarr forces in a route of the invading Elder Fleet, using a Terran superweapon to turn the tide of battle. The battle forced the Elder Fleet to retreat from Empire space, preventing the release of billions of slaves. Jamyl Sarum was hailed as a savior of the Empire and used the popularity of her victory to claim the Imperial throne.

Background

Early on June 10th, a combined Minmatar-Thukker fleet entered Yulai through an unknown cynosural network[1] and assaulted the CONCORD Bureau Headquarters there.[2] The attack disrupted CONCORD communications[3] and eventually lead to the destruction of the station, eliminating CONCORD's ability to rapidly deploy across the cluster.[4]

Shortly after, additional Minmatar-Thukker fleets invaded the Ammatar Mandate[5] and Amarr Empire[6]. These two fleets swept across the Empire and Mandate, invading worlds, spreading Insorum, freeing slaves, and destroying Amarr and Ammatar military installations.[7][8][9] The Amarr forces were left in disarray after their own communications hubs were destroyed by the fleet and proved incapable of mounting a coherent defense.[10]

Eventually, it was learned that the Minmatar-Thukker fleet was being led by the Minmatar Elders.[11]

Battle of Mekhios

A third Minmatar-Thukker fleet appeared in the Domain region and began an assault on Sarum Prime. By the time, local fleets of the Amarr Navy had managed to rally and took up a defensive posture around the third planet, Mekhios.[12] The two sides engaged in a “brutal stalemate”, until the Amarr Navy suddenly disengaged from combat, leaving the Elder Fleet to control the field. There was some belief that the Navy was abandoning Domain to regroup in Kor-Azor with other Naval fleets.[13]

However, the retreat proved to be a tactical maneuver, done by order of Jamyl Sarum.[7] Sarum revealed that she had survived her apparent ritual suicide following the coronation of Doriam II and entered the field on board an Abaddon with an escort of twelve Apocalypses.[14] Shortly after, a massive explosion was detected over Mekhios, temporarily disrupting communications and monitoring feeds in the system.[15]

Once visuals were restored, it was revealed that the Elder Fleet had been completely destroyed. Jamyl Sarum and her escort was nowhere to be seen. Ground forces that had been deployed by the Minmatar began to suffer heavy losses as their space support was eliminated, allowing the Amarr ground forces to completely route them.[16]

Immediate Aftermath

Under the command of Jamyl Sarum, the Imperial Navy rallied in Kor-Azor and began to assault the Elder Fleet operating in that region. The fleet, as well as the one operating inside the Ammatar Mandate, began a retreat toward the Minmatar Republic. Sarum and the Navy gave chase and destroyed what ships could be caught.[17]

As the fleet retreated through the Bleak Lands, the remnants of the Defiants terrorist organization staged a delaying action against the Navy.[18] This allowed the Elder Fleet to cross into the Minmatar Republic, where Sarum and the Navy broke off pursuit.[19] Shortly after, CONCORD reestablished its rapid response capability and put a halt to all combat throughout the cluster.[20]

Long Term Consequences

Jamyl Sarum's sudden return and victory over the Elder fleet brought about mixed reactions from the Amarr populace.[21] However, her actions were viewed as heroic by the majority of the populace, who viewed her as a savior. The Sarum Family declared her return a divine miracle, and the Amarr Heirs declared their support for her to assume the throne.[22] Soon after, the Theology Council confirmed her suitability for the throne, eliminating all public opposition to her coronation.[23]

The Elder Fleet was eliminated as a military threat and has apparently dispersed. The Battle forced their early retreat, likely saving millions of Amarr lives and resulting in millions of Minmatar slaves being left behind. It appears all surviving ships were confiscated by the Republic Fleet.

The battle over Mehkios was disastrous for the planet. Thousands of tons of debris was left in orbit following the battle, much of which remains there to this day. Some debris entered the planetary atmosphere and caused widespread destruction across the planet's northern continent.[24]
